Pop-Up Pot-Pourri, and an improvisation workshop

On FRIDAY OCTOBER 25, 2024, join us for POP-UP POT-POURRI – an eclectic, in-the-round evening of music including late sixteenth-century works by William Byrd from Lady Nevell’s Book and other sources, Canadian recorder quartets from the mid-twentieth century by Jean Papineau-Couture and George Fiala, hurdy gurdy solos by Ligeti and Matthias Loibner, improvisations on haiku, and more.

Gracing the floorboards to perform will be Ben Grossman, vielle à roue/hurdy gurdy; Alison Melville, flutes; Louise Hung, virginal; and recorder players Romina Abadi, Colin Savage and Yasuchika Suzuki – and YOU, members of the audience, who will select and read out the haiku! In addition, some conversation between musicians and audience members will get our synapses firing. It’s a 1590s/1950s/haiku ‘happening!’

Friday October 25, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heliconian Hall, 35 Hazelton Avenue, Toronto.

Tickets: https://bemusednetwork.com/events/detail/1023 or at the door.

Once again this is a pay-what-you-wish event, and everyone is truly welcome. If you’re able, please consider a minimum of $20 per person. North Wind Concerts doesn’t receive funding from government bodies, foundations or corporate sponsors. You can also donate to us in exchange for a tax receipt and our undying gratitude!

On SATURDAY OCTOBER 26 from 2 to 4 pm, BEN GROSSMAN will be teaching a workshop for musicians new to free improvisation. This workshop isn’t about jazz or how to play over changes, it’s not about how to ornament a tune or play a cadenza – it’s about using your instruments and voices to explore new ways of sounding and new sonic possibilities. Shake off habits, and find new relationships to your body, instrument, and the sounds and musicians around you. If you’re a player or singer whose feet haven’t yet dipped into the waters of free improvisation – COME ON DOWN!

IMPROVISATION FOR BEGINNERS. Saturday October 26, from 2 – 4 pm, at the Heliconian Hall, 35 Hazelton Avenue, Toronto.

Participant fee: $25. Auditors: $10.
